How to Properly Tighten a Mountain Bike Chain: A Step-by-Step Guide
To tighten a mountain bike chain, first shift the chain to the smallest sprocket in the rear and largest chainring in the front. Then, loosen the rear axle nut on the side with the chain tensioner. Pull the wheel back until the chain is tight, then tighten the axle nut to secure it in place. Finally, check the chain tension by pushing down on the chain midway between the chainrings. The chain should deflect no more than half an inch. Adjust as necessary and recheck until desired tension is achieved.
