To change gears on an 18-speed mountain bike, first, understand that the left shifter controls the front chainring, while the right shifter controls the rear cassette. To shift to a lower gear, spin the pedals while pushing the right shifter inwards, and to shift to a higher gear, pedal while pulling the shifter outwards. To shift to a lower gear on the front chainring, use the left shifter while simultaneously shifting up the gears on the rear cassette using the right shifter.
