To pump on a mountain bike, use your weight and momentum to generate speed. As you approach a downhill section, shift your weight back and lower your center of gravity by bending your arms and legs. Then, as you start going downhill, push down on the pedals and allow the bike to roll over bumps by letting your body absorb the impact. At the bottom of the hill, push down on the pedals again to accelerate and regain speed.
